Honu Soulmates

Petroglyph is a word that comes from the Greek words, "petras", for rock and 'glyphen", to carve. Literally, petroglyphs are rock carvings.
This Limited Edition print on aluminum was created by Maui artist, Guy Junker. The making of this piece involves several elements of Guy’s photography including photographs of paint streaks and water splatters, photographs of his own stone carvings and a U.S. Geological Survey Topographical Map from 1910-1933 was also incorporated into the design.

The resulting image is then infused into a specially prepared aluminum panel and sealed with a protective glossy coating. Because the image is actually infused into the aluminum, it give the artwork an incredible clarity, depth and luminosity.

This Geo Petro includes a section of the West Maui shoreline from Kahana down to Kaanapali and features two Honu (turtle) petroglyphs. Traditionally the Honu or Sea Turtle was an ancestral guardian for the ancient Hawaiian family. The honu connects us with our past as they are symbols of longevity and the ultimate navigators who return to the sands of their birth.

"This piece was a culmination of many of my favorite types of art.  It involves my photography of my own hand made stone carvings, poured and abstract painting, and antique maps overlays all printed in a very contemporary and unique process on aluminum."
