Ichgio Ichie #23
This sculpture is
carved on natural stone (quartzite) and includes a
hanging framework made of bamboo and hemp. The
Japanese kanji calligraphy reads "Ichigo, Ichie" and
literally translates to "One encounter, one chance"
Ichigo-Ichie
means that every encounter with someone, even a
friend whom you see often, should be treated as if
it were a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. (As if
today were the last time you might meet) The
underlying philosophy of the tea ceremony is perhaps
best described with this phrase.
This carving would make an excellent gift for sensei
or for a dedication to a new dojo or dan ranking.
If you would like a special dedication on the back,
just add your wording in the "Special Instructions"
box at final checkout. Here is an
example
"This piece features two natural fissures running
through the stone which add to its uniqueness. The
coloring is quite dramatic."
