Ohana - Honu Aumakua
Venerated
Hawaiian scholar, Mary Kawena Pukui, wrote of the
'aumakua, "As gods and relatives in one, they
give us strength when we are weak, warning when
danger threatens, guidance in our bewilderment,
inspiration in our arts. They are equally our
judges, hearing our words and watching our actions.

Drawn to the power and energy in the simple forms
of petroglyphs art, I found that many things that
appear simple on the surface can conceal deeper
truths. Rediscovering these truths, and the
rediscovery of native culture through the arts,
further fuels my passion for exploring the
petroglyph.
This piece began as an action
painting--essentially starting by pouring paint onto
the panel surface similar to the processes of
Jackson Pollock. This initial spontaneous step
stands in high contrast to the glazing process, a
highly disciplined way of painting; slowly building
up color and luminescence.
"This was one of the first pieces I did using the
action-painting method. I really enjoy mixing the
spontaneous style of the poured style and the
disciplined, methodical glazing process. Perhaps it
satisfies the Gemini in me."
